1년여간의 자료수집과 2년여간의 해외 정부기관 및 학교, 유아교육기관의 탐방, 국내ㆍ외 비교유아교육 강의를 통한 노하우를 본 서적에 담았다. 지금 세계는 유아기의 교육이 그 어떤 투자보다 가치 있다는 것을 알아가고 있으며, 유아교육의 목표는 개인적, 교육적, 사회적인 측면에서 조금씩 차이는 보이나 자국의 발전을 위하여 유아교육에 대한 지원을 확대하고 있는 추세이다. 이 책은 1장에서 비교교육학과 비교유아교육에 대해 설명하였으며, 2장에서는 서부 유럽의 유아교육(프랑스, 영국, 이탈리아, 독일), 3장에서는 북부 유럽의 유아교육(핀란드, 스웨덴), 4장에서는 아메리카와 오세아니아의 유아교육(미국, 호주), 5장에서는 아시아의 유아교육(한국, 중국, 일본)으로 각 나라별 교육제도, 유아교육의 역사, 행ㆍ재정 체제와 교원 제도 및 유아교육과정 등으로 구성하였다. 또한 2장부터 5장까지의 각 장에는 해당 나라와 관련한 읽을거리와 교수ㆍ학습 사례를 제시하였다.
