Explore Social Skills Curriculum is an intervention program for adolescents and young adults with developmental disabilities, including autism. It focuses on 50 important skills (shown below) and provides students step-by-step instruction through video modeling, photo-based directions, and role playing. A teacher-monitored, self-assessment procedure keeps students engaged in the process.

Explore Social Skills incorporates skills that are ideal for writing in IEPs. By concentrating on classroom, community and workplace standards that all students must possess, it is general enough to apply to all students. With sufficient practice, students will be able to generalize these 50 skills into any setting in the real world in which they will need to function. The social skills presented can be taught individually or in small groups as needs arise. For example, if James has been getting into arguments while standing in line or waiting for the bus, working on the skill set Standing in Line will help him learn the skills necessary to avoid problems. The fact is that social skills are being learned in school every day already, whether or not the teacher guides the instruction. Why not be in the driver’s seat when it comes to determining the direction that instruction takes Explore Social Skills has four components: The Card Set has 50 laminated cards that fold to 4 x 6-inches. The card front shows a large theme photo and a brief text description of the skill, for example, Getting Ready for School. Inside, each skill is broken down to five steps with clear, concise and easy to “read” photos. On the back, a self-talk story provides a skill attainment strategy. The Student Book consists of larger versions of the cards, with a self-monitoring checklist for each of the 50 social skills. The Teacher’s Manual features narrative, objective, teacher script and role play activities for each social skill. A global assessment form with all 50 skills helps you organize instruction. The manual also provides 27 Supplemental Skills, like Respecting Friends and Greeting Coworkers. The Video Modeling DVD demonstrates each social skill step-by-step with age-appropriate actors. The actors subsequently reflect on issues relevant to the skill performance. Written by veteran special education teacher Judi Kinney. The Student Book is spiralbound, full-color, 224 pages. The Teacher's Manual is spiralbound, full-color, 242 pages and includes a PDF on Win/Mac CD with a Classroom License for printouts. The DVD is CC, SDH Subtitles, 85 minutes run time. The Card Set has 50 laminated cards in a durable box. 2012. |
