Teaching to Standards: MATH

Provides students with disabilities access to a standards-based math program

Teaching to Standards: MATH is a systematic, year-long math curriculum for middle and high school students with moderate-to-severe developmental disabilities, including autism.

Details

Two years of ongoing research at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte have shown the program to be highly effective in teaching math skills aligned to NCTM standards. Each student has his/her own MathWork book. Daily lessons begin with a real-world story illustrated with picture cues, and are taught with fading support levels. Stories are read to the students so no minimum reading level is required. A graphic organizer presents a problem for every story. Students write or place manipulatives to work out the solution.
